New York NY Museums - NYC offers many choices for the visitor with the desire to view gorgeous works of art. You could spend an entire week, exploring all of the museum choices. In 1978, museums located on Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 104th streets formed a bond which was later called Museum Mile. The area begins with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and moves northbound, ending with El Museo del Barrio (the Neighborhood Museum). It is impossible to tackle all of the museums in this area in one day- even some of the smaller choices could take hours of your time. It is suggested that you visit the spots that are on the top of your list and unfortunately- the Metropolitan is so large that you area only able to view a portion of the collection in a day.


Metropolitan Museum of Art

Some say it is not only the best museum in New York, but the best in North America as well. Approximately 5 million people a year flock here to gaze upon Egyptian mummies to ancient Greek statues. It is easy to spend your entire vacation within the walls of this museum. The Main Building of the Metropolitan Museum—its galleries, restaurants, and shops are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. $15 recommended for adults, $10 recommended for senior citizens, $7 recommended for students

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Some of the world’s greatest collections of paintings and sculptures from the late 19th century to present are kept at this 630,000-square-foot museum. Unfortunately the real deal is has been under construction and visitors will have to settle for the temporary MoMA QNS, located in Queens. The museum also hosts programs on Fashion, Film and Photography. Admission is $9.50 for adults, $6.50 for students and seniors, free for children under 16. Pay what you like 4:30pm-8:30pm Friday.

Guggenheim Museum

Set aside a good 2 to 4 hours to cover the bulk of this Frank Lloyd Wright creation. Become inspired by French Renaissance paintings, works by Picasso and Kandinsky, to name a few. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, free for children under 12.

American Folk Art Museum

A newer building houses a collection of art, displaying the talents from the 18th century to the present. Check out the variety of quilts in the textiles collection. After you have completed your tour of the place, purchase a one-of-a-kind item at the extensive book and gift shop.

Museum of Sex
233 Fifth Ave (at 27th St)
Hours: M-F 11am-6pm, Sa 10am-9pm, Su 10am-6pm
For something totally different, check out this museum focused on the history of sex and its influences on culture. As you enter the exhibit, visitors wear a scarlet X as proof of their ticket. May of the exhibits are graphic, so let’s save this one for the adults. Admission: $17 for adults.

Explore the legacy of many well-known artists during the 20th century, such as Georgia O’Keefe, Jasper Johns and Keith Haring. Try the museum’s restaurant: Sarabeth’s at the Whitney, which has received many rave reviews.
